Colonial Algerian School Uniform:  Individual Schools--Ecole Gambetta Maternelle Classes

Figure 1.--Here we see a Maternelle class at the Ecole Gambetta in 1948. We are a little confused as we note another photograoh from 1948 which shows boys and girls. This class only has boys. We wonder if there was more than one Maternelle class.

French nursery schools seem to have been mostly included as part of primary schools (ecoles). I'm not sure just how common this was, but we note many schools in both Algeria and France that had nursery schools. The image here is the nursery school class in 1948 which is made up of both boys and girls. The other classes at the Ecole Gambetta were all boys. Most of the children wear smocks, but they apparently not required and not all of the boys wore them.

Quite a number of the children at this state school are Algerian, but are wearing French styled clothes. One boy (n° 4) is wearing a romper under his smock. Perhaps others were dressed like that.
