Colonial Algerian School Uniform:  Individual Schools-- Ecole de Momplaisant Garçons Students

Figure 1.--Here we see the Ecole de Momplaisant Garçons in 1951. The boys are mostly French, but there are a few Algerian boys. I'm not sure what class this was, but would guess that it is a CE2 class. The boys wear mostly short panrs, but a few boys wear long pants. Several boys wear smocks, but not as many as in the CE1 class.

School attendance was compulsory, although much more common in the cities than in the countryside. Most of the boys look to be French, but there are several Algerian boys as well. There were no separate schools for Algerian and French children. Many school images we have show mostly French children. This was in part because the schools reflected the ethnic makeup of the neighborhoods where the schools were located. We assume there were also schools with mostly Algerian children.
