School Experiences: Maltese Boy in Cyprus (1970-72)

Figure 1.--Here is my class at the Berengaria School in Cyprus during 1971. There was no uniform, but we all dressed pretty much alike. You can see me at the arrow.

My name is John Barbara, I come from the Island of Malta, In 1969 my Dad was posted to Episkopi Cyprus for 3 years and I had my first education at berengaria infants' school from 1970-72 and remember quiet a lot of details. Well to start with my teacher was Ms Humphrey she was a very kind and sweet, dedicated woman, she was like a mother and the kids loved her to bits, About the school uniform, my mum used to dress me in tee shirts and shorts, white socks and sandals in summer and plimsolls in winter, I used to wear a navy blue top with red and white stripe coming down from my shoulder (the Mod type), but I don't remember wearing any trousers, I remember wearing a blue anorak when it rained. I remember the Christmas play which was the tale of the turnip. My sister who is 4 years older use to attend with the juniors just across the road and my older brother used to go to St. John's in Episkopi. I remember my Mum coming home with a new born Baby (that's my younger brother). Our family lived in Ammonia Estate in Limassol in a hired bungalow and played with the local children, they where our neighbours I used to go and help them with the harvest because they where farmers, I remember me running in the bondoo aswell and learnt afew words too like the numbers from 1 - 20 words like please and thank you, I can still remember all the kids in our street in our drive in cooling down in their swimming trunks while Mum spraying us with a hose pipe. I can still remember the tornado that hit the island which left us with no electricity. And there were street venders selling traditional sweets such as a kind of pastry cooked and smeared with honey, waiting for the breadman. We used to go swimming at Ladies Mile, Governor's Beach, Evdimou Beach and Camping there also for a week Buttons Bay, we used to go shopping at St Andrew's and the NAAFI, our good landlord Costa used to come and visit us once in a while we and were invited to his daughter's wedding in Paphos. The wedding reception took three nights and we went to Kato Paphos harbour for a walk. My Dad drove us all the way to Stavrovouni Monastry and the Pan Handle for the weekend and we slept in the Apostolos San Andreas Monastry. I remember Troodos Mountains it used to be very cold up there, St. Hilarion Castle, Kean Drinks and Shish Kebabs, Go Cart racing at Akrotiri and Kolossi Castle and Happy Valley fun fair, especially the BFPO Children's Christmas Party of 1971, less than a month later my Dad was posted back to RAF Luqa in Malta and me and my siblings started to attend school in the Government schools here in Malta.
