Figure 1.--We do not have many Australian school images from the 19th century. This photograph shows the pupils attending Springsure State School in 1884. Springsure is a small town in Queensland. The children seem to be all girls. They all wear dresses without pinafores. We are guessing that there were also boys at the school, but they were photographed separately. This was a little unusual. Springsure seems tob small to have had a separate school.

Most of the girls seem to have short hair cuts. We are guessing that there were also boys at the school, but they were photographed separately. This was a little unusual. Springsure seems tob small to have had a separate school.
