Russian Schoolwear Garments: Tunics

Figure 1.-- This is a Eussian primary school class sime where in Rostov Yaroslavl province during 1915. Notice the nimber of boys wearing belted tunics. For some reasom at theyrn of the 20th century, Russian blouses/tunics bcame a popular style in the Westm especially the United States.

The earlies images we have of Russoan boys show them commonly wearing tunics to school. These are boys in rural primary schools. The tunics were basically serf clothing, what both boys and adult men wore. There were few if any schools in rural areas at the beginning of the 19th century, but by the end of the century, primary schools existed throughout the Russian Empire. And tunics worn with belts were the primary gaements worn to school. It was not an special school garment, it was what the boys normally wore. Many of these boys had little more to wear than what they wore daily. We are not sure what boys wore in city schools, but we think that these tunics were also worn, but not as commonly. Secondary schools in the city had actual uniforms, mostly military styles. Some of the styles were tunics which was baically the style worn by the Russian Army. These tunics which were so common throughout the 19th and early-20th centurym but rapidly disappeared after the Russian Revolution and Civil War (1917-21). This changed after World war II, we begin to see boys wearing school unifirms based on the Red Army tunics.
