Russian School Clothes: ABC Day (2006-07)

Figure 1.--Another special day is "Prazdnik Bukvarya" (a celebracion of ABC-book). This day is celebrates the pupils in 1st grade/form (6 or 7 years old) successfully completing their ABCs. This is done in the first year of the 4-year primary (elementary) school program. In this photograph you can see children, playing roles of some letters from the Russian (cyrillic) alphabet. I'm not sure about the date, but believe ot was taken in 2007. A Russian reader has provided some insigts into the photograph here.

Another special day is "Prazdnik Bukvarya" (a celebracion of ABC-book). This day is celebrates the pupils in 1st grade/form (6 or 7 years old) successfully completing their ABCs. This is done in the first year of the 4year primary (elementary) school program. The celebration usually occurs at the end of winter. In 3-year primary schools at the end of autumn. For the celebration each child is assigned a letter. In this photograph you can see children, playing roles of some letters from the Russian (cyrillic) alphabet (figure 1). The children presumably dressed up for the event. The boy in the photograph wears short pants with black tights and a white shirt. A Russian reader has provided some insights about the children's clothes.

Chronology

If the children are from 3-year elementary school, I suppose this picture was taken in the end of 2006th, not in 2007. If they are from 4-year elementary school, then right, this photo is taken in 2007. 3-year and 4-year elementary schools in Russia have one and the same tutorial program, but 4-years school begins in 6 years old, and is much easier, with more games, plays and so on. 3-year primary schools begins at age 7 years old and the program is more rigerous. After finishing all children go to 5th grade (secondary school) - thats why a lot of children in Russian after 3d grade go to 5th.

Clothes

The girlf on the left has put on her best outfit for a special occasion. The two middle girls wear normal school outfits. These outfits are currently very popular for school wear in Russia. If it is a 1st grade/form class from a 4-year primary school, then the boy is about 6 years old. The outfit forva boy that age could be ordinary school clothes. The 1st graders of such schools have a lot in common with kindergardens, including 35-minutes (non 45-minutes) lessons, 1-hour long nap after a midday, and so on. But if he is older, then this outfit would be for special celebration only. Older boys in schools tend to see tights as "kindergarten" clothes and don't like to wear them with short pants.
