South African School Uniform Seasonality: Seasonal Uniforms

Figure 1.--This is the everyday school uniform at this boarding school in South Africa during the early 2000s. we are not yet sure how common the Roman Sandals are in South Africa.

We are just beginning to develop information on school uniform seasonality in South Africa. MAny schools have uniforms and often there was seasonal differences. The major differences seems to be that the garments are sonewhat heavier during the winter season. The same situation is compsarable to Australia and New Zealand. We note some schools with grey cotton shirts and shorts like the summer uniforms worn in New Zealand. Here we note this uniform being worn at prep schools, we do not known if it is worn at the secondary level or public (state) schools. Unlike New Zealand we note boys wearing the uniform with kneesocks and shoes like the school here. We notice a few schools wear the boys wear Roman sandals in the summer, but it does not seem as common as in New Zealand. Winter uniforms might be heavier shirts and jimoers worn with shorts with a wool blend or long trousers.

Summer

The major seasonal uniform differences in South Africa seems to be that the garments are sonewhat heavier during the winter season. The same situation is compsarable to Australia and New Zealand. We note some schools with light-weight grey cotton shirts and shorts like the summer uniforms worn in New Zealand. We do not know how common this is in South Africa. Nor`are we entirely sure of the differences between primaru and secondary schools as well as private and state schools. We notice a few schools wear the boys wear Roman sandals in the summer like the boys here (figure 1). Sandals do not seem as common as in New Zealand. Many primary school students go barefoot. This presumably is more common in the summer than during the winter.

Winter

We do not yet know much about the winter uniform. The really heavy winter clothing worn in North Amerixa and Europe are not needed in South Africa. Winter uniforms might be heavier shirts and jimoers worn with shorts with a wool blend or long trousers. We think knee socks and shoes were more common with the winter uniform.
