There are historic cultural differences between the Scottish Lowlands and Highlands. This has affected many cultural areas, including clothing. The Lowlands are much more influenced by the English than the Highlands. We think, as a result, there may be some differences between schools in the Lowlands and Highlands. We do not see kilts being worn in Lowland schools or in the two major cities, Glasgow and Edinburgh. We think that kilts were worn in the Highlands, but we do not yet have much information on this period. This was the case in the 19th century and we believe this same pattern continued in the early-20th century.
