Deaf children were not educated befre the 19th century. The earliest deaf school we know of America was founded in 1817. There were earlier schools in Europe, but not much earlier. The first deaf school in Sweden was the Stockholm School for the Deaf (1800). It was founded by Henrik Wilhelm Hult, it aimed to provide education for deaf children. The school introduced methods for teaching deaf students, including sign language. It played a significant role in the development of deaf education in Sweden and influenced similar institutions. We note a school for deaf and hard of hearing children established in Vänersborg, Sweden (1877). The school also ran a vocational program that guaranteed its students future employment in a craft. Here we have a phoyograph (1914). The girls have a kind of uniform, red checked dress and white pinafores. Pinafores were very common for girls at the time in Sweden. The boys wear a variety of outfits. The school changed its name to Vänerskolan (1965).
