Individual Swiss School Garments: Sailor Suits

Figure 1.--We do not see many Swiss boys wearing sailor suits to school. There are a few exceptions. We are not sure why sailor suits were not very popular.

We have noted few Swiss boys wearung sailor suits, although we do not yet have much information on the early-20th century. A reader writes, "You were remarking on the paucity of sailor suits being worn in the German-speaking area of Switzerland. It is true that we see very few, but here is one of them that might be useful to display. This kindergarten boy was photographed in the city of Zurich on January 19, 1939. He wears the usual long cotton stockings with supporters attached to a Strapsleibchen or what was sometimes referred to as a "stocking shirt". He is about 5 or 6 years old. Notice the sailor striped styling on his blouse collar and cuffs. He wears a button-on suit with the short trousers buttoned with large white buttons to his blouse. He also has ornamental buttons on his short trousers, a bit too short to cover the tops of his long stockings. He seems to have his thumb in his mouth, a habit that young children sometimes found it hard to break. Notice the toys at his feet and the felt slippers that he wears indoors for kindergarten purposes. He would obviously wear more substantial shoes for outdoor wear, especially in January, when the photo was taken."
