Individual Swiss School: Bäretswil School--4th Year Class (1944)

Figure 1.--This is a group of what looks like fourth year students, probably about 10 years old. The photo was taken on October 26th, 1944 Since it is late October, chilly but not yet really cold, we see a variety of trousers for the boys. In the front row, for example, two of the boys wear baggy knickers and knee socks, one boy wears shorts with black knee socks and therefore has bare knees, and the most dressed up of the boys wears a neat short trousers suit with brown long stockings.

The girls mostly wear pinafores with dresses or skirts and sweaters and all wear long stockings, either black or dark brown. The teacher is Herr Ernst Haartmann, wearing a white shirt with a suit jacket and sweater underneath. One of the boys with baggy knickers wears hiking boots with ankle woolen socks turned down over them, but nearly all the other children wear low-cult leather dress shoes. One of the girls also has ankle socks on top of her dark brown long stockings. Notice the boy in the back row on the right who wears elastic suspenders, probably with shorts and long stockings, but perhaps with knickers.
