Individual Swiss State Schools: Vingelz Villaqe Primary School (1908)

Figure 1.--Here we see children at the primary school at Vingelz in 1908. The Vingelz photographs show all kinds of interesting activities and items at the school. Note here two good friends, girls playing a string game, and other girls knitting.

Here we see the children and their young lady teacher in 1908. Notice how the teacher is sitting in the middle of the class. This seems to suggest a closer relationship with the children than similar portraits where the teacher is at the side or behind the class. The children all look quite young. We wonder if there could have been a class with the older children. The Vingelz photographs show all kinds of interesting activities and items at the school. Not all of the children are diszplaying items, but many are. Note here two good friends, girls playing a string game, and other girls knitting. One particularly interesting item is the class abacus. At the time I believe that the abacus was widely used to teach mathematics. Notice how one boy is showing it off. Other children are showing off their books. Several girls hold flowers. I am not sure what flower theybhave or if it has been chosen for any reason. We see all kinds of outfits. The girls wear dresses, some with pinafores. The boys wear smocks, tunics and a variety of shirts and jackets. Two boys have large floppy bows. Many of the boys have short hair. The girls mostly have long hair.

The Teacher

Here we see the children and their young lady teacher in 1908. Notice how the teacher is sitting in the middle of the class. She looks young, perhaps even a new teacher. This seems to suggest a closer relationship with the children than similar portraits where the teacher is at the side or behind the class. Iim not sure how common lady teachers were in these village schools.

Age

There are 25 children here. The children all look quite young. We wonder if there could have been a class with the older children. The girls around the teacher look a little older than any of the boys. Some of the younger children seen quite young, perhaps about 5 years old or even younger. Perhaps village schools were flexible as to the age children began. Here I am not sure. None of the children seen much older than 10 years at the most. I think these village schools normally had older children than that.

Activities and Items

The Vingelz photographs show all kinds of interesting activities and items at the school. Not all of the children are diszplaying items, but many are. Note here two good friends, girls playing a string game, and other girls knitting. One particularly interesting item is the class abacus. I am not sure what flower the bhave or if it has been chosen for any reason.

Clothing

The children look quite well dress, especially for children at a rural village school. Many of the children seem quite smartly dressed. We see all kinds of outfits. The girls wear dresses, some with pinafores. The boys wear smocks, tunics and a variety of shirts and jackets. Smocks after World war became a required school uniform, but here only a few boys wear a pinafore-style smock. Notice the boy wearing a tunic wears a leather belt over it. Two children have sailor outfits. Two boys have large floppy bows. The boys seems to be wearing kneepants and knickers. All the children wear shoes and stockings.

Hair

Many of the boys have short hair. The girls mostly have long hair.
