U.S. School Activities and Events: Fire Drills

Figure 1.-- This drawing reportedly illustrates a fire drill in the 1870s. We are not sure if it represents an actual school and if so what school.

Fire is an ever present danger in croded buildings and of course children are a special concern. Thus care has to be taken so that the saff and the children know how to react in case of a fire. Schools are required. We have begun to collect some images here, but so far have very few actual images. The image here is inteesting, on part because it represents a school from the 1870s when we have relitevely few images. Note that the boys are almost all wearing long pants, but a few boys are wearing keepants which were becoming more commoin in the 1870s. We are not sure just how to interpret this image. It certainly is a large school. We rather suspect that in the 1870s there weren't that many schools this large. The detail leads one to believe that it was a depiction of an actual school. Unfortunately we do not kbnow the name of the school.
