U.S. School Activities and Events: Preparing for the New Year

new school year
Figure 1.--Here we see a press photograph of a school that seens to be preparing bew studebts, but the caotion foes not provide mich in the wat of details. The writing on the back simply read, "Project 8 children. Michael greeted by teachers." We have no idea just what Projrct 8 was. The photograph was dated August 23, 1968.

Preparing for a new year was rather much up to parents and the children. It imvolved purchasing an asortment of school supplies and of course warm school clothes. The girls in particular are interested in trendy new styles. This all occirred during the summer month of August. July is the hottest month, but August is not much cooler. School usually began after Labor Day at the beginning of September. School did not do much to prepare the children for the New Year, not even the new First Graders. That may have changed somewaht at modern schools, but as far as I know was the case until recently. The schools did prepare the buildings and class rooms for the New Year. And the reachers began setting up their classrooms. But there were no real efforts to prepare the students. I think schools in iarger countrues make more of an effort to prepare the children. Of course the American educarion system is diverse, actually 50 separate state school systems, so there may have been some effots in some schools. A reader writes, "I always dreaded the start of a new school year. I loved summer vacation and considered school as an infringement of my freedom. Like most kids in the 1950s and 60s summer meant being out at play from dusk to dawn. Around the second week in August I would get depressed knowing that Labor Day was just around the corner. I can't remember shopping for school clothes however I do remember going to the Stride-Rite shoe store and buying black oxford shoes which I wore throughout elementary school. I did enjoy shopping for school supplies. In elementary school 2 standard items were those black school not books and a cigar box for your pens, pencils etc. If you purchased your supplies at the local drug store you received a complimentary cigar box."
