U.S. School Activities and Events: Unknown Activities

school marching group
Figure 1.-- Here we see a large group at what looks like an American elementary (primary) school. We see boys and girls of different ages. So the children have either been selected or volunteered for this activity. There are uniform items which varied by age level. The boys wear shite shirts and ties, the girls wear white dresses or white blouses. The younger boys wear short pants, many white short pants . the older boys wear knickers or long pants. Many but not all have capes or distinctive caps. One boy is dressed as a drum major. All we know foir sure is the date--1937. The studio helps locate the school. It was Louis Kurs in Mechanicville, New York.

Schools and education are constantly chaging as society inevitably changes over time. We have found some images that we are not sure how to interpret based on our school experiences. This is primarily activities in schools before World War II. Perhaps readers will have some idea about what is going on at these schools.

Figure 1: Marching Group?

Here we see a large group at what looks like an American elementary (primary) school (figure 1). We see boys and girls of different ages. So the children have either been selected or volunteered for this activity. There are uniform items which varied by age level. The boys wear shite shirts and ties, the girls wear white dresses or white blouses. The oldest group seems to have whire jackets. The younger boys wear short pants, many white short pants . the older boys wear knickers or long pants. Many but not all have capes or distinctive caps. One boy is dressed as a drum major. This of course suggests a marching band, a kind of real life Broadway 'Music Man'. But the children, especially the younger ones are too yongbto handle musical instruments, especially the brass instruments demanded by a marching band. And having to march and play adds a level of complexity that many of the children could not yet master. And we think that if they were a band, the instruments would be on display. Another possibility is a marching group without the intruments. All we know for sure is the date--1937. the studio helps locate the school. It was Louis Kurs in Mechanicville, New York.
