U.S. School Clothes: Buckland School (Buckland, Massachusetts)

Buckland School
Figure 1.-- Here is a photograph of the Buckland School in 1893. Buckland was founded in late-colonial times (1742). It was apparently named for the prevalence of game. the population of the town was about 1,500 people. Thus only a small school was needed. Our photograph shows about 20 children who loook to be about 6-10 years old. Presumably there was a class for older children of about the same size. We have only a gilmse of the school, a white plank building, probably with two classrooms. The children are pictured with their teacher. The girls wear dresses, many with pinafores. There are no hair bows. The boys wear blouses and knee pants. The younger boys we can see are barefoot, suggesting it was late in the school year, probably June.

The younger boys we can see are barefoot, suggesting it was late in the school year, probably June. The girls in contrast all have shoes. Note that even though some of the children must have come from farms, none of the boys wear overalls. For some reason, we do not begin to see many bib overalls at school until the late-1900s decade and then they become standard at rural schools in the 1910s. Also interesting is that even though was the height of the Fauntleroy Craze, the boys do not have elaborate Fauntleroy items. The best dressed boy has a small bow, very modest in 1890s terms. It is the girls that have large lace collars. There are more boys with close-cropped hair than we usually see in American schools. The girls have varied hair styles, sone very short, rather boyish. Others with long hair.
