U.S. School Clothes: East View School (Kentucky, 1911)

Figure 1.-- The East View School was located in Grayson Country Kentucky. It looks a typical rural school at the time. An school portrait taken in 1911 shows the boys mostly wearing overalls or kneepants. Notice the number of boys wearing overalls. This was not very common in the 1900s. Several boys wear blouses with wide collars. Click on the image to see the rest of the class.

The East View School was located in Grayson Country Kentucky. It looks a typical rural school at the time, although unlike many of these school portraits, the children were not photographed in front of their school. The school portrait here was taken in 1911 and shows the boys mostly wearing overalls or kneepants (figure 1). The overalls the boys wear are quite varied. One boy at the front has overalls that look almost like a plain pinafore rather than bib-front overalls. I'm not sure why that was. Perhaps some mother made overalls at home. Home sewing was still quite common. Notice the number of boys wearing overalls. This was something we do not note in the 1900s until the later part of the decade. Many of the boys not wearing overalls are wearing suspenders. Several boys wear blouses with wide collars. The girls all wear dresses. Several have pigtails and hairbows. All of the children appear to be barefott, although the older children in the back row presumably are wearing shoes. There is quite an age range here. Some of the older children look more like high school students. We believe that some of these rural schools often had classes up to grade 8. (A normal primary was grades 1-6.). Grade 8 might be children 13-14 years old or even older if they got a late start or did not do well in school. We have another Grayson County school archieved on HBC, the Greenbriar School. The children there look a little more prosperous and you can see their school.
