U.S. School Clothes: Globe School Unknown Group (1910s)

Figure 1.--Here we see a group of children from Globe, Arizona. We think they attended the Globe school. It is not clear where they are located. Perhaps they are gathered outside their school. They boys may be old enough to be in one of the early grades of high school., but they look to be at a house rather than the school. The photograph is undated, but looks like the 1910s to us. The boys look to be about 11-13 years old. This seems to be part of a larger school photo.

The children look to be about 10-12 years old. American elementary school has grades 1-6 (ages 6-12 years). In rural areas or small towns where there was not a junior or senior high school nearby by, the elementary schools often had 7th and 8th grades. This seems to be part of a larger school photo. The boys are wearing suits, rather rumpled, and not always with a tie. The flat caps belong to the period. They wear knee pants with black long stockings. One of the boys is wearing round garters to hold up his black stockings rather than the more conventional hose supporters.
