U.S. School Clothes: John Milledge School (1928)

Figure 1.--This is the 3rd grade class at the John Milledge School in Georgia during 1928. Thevchikdren would have been about 8 years old. This looks to be a primary school in a toen. The size of the class and the substantial red brick buildimg shows that it was not a rural school. All the boys we can see are barefoot. This would have been quite common in a small town. We are not sure about the girls. We suspect tht somevwould also have been barefoot, but probably some wear shoes. The boys mostly wear white shirts, several with ties showing mothers had dfferent ideas as to how to dress the kids for school. One boy wears a button-on shorts set. The other boys wears short panrs or knickers. The girls are in the back with their teacher. They look to be wearing mostly dress althogh sone may be wearing blouses and skirts.
