Newhall appears to be a fairly typical American elementary (primary) school. Here we see the school in 1911. The boys appear to be wearing overalls or knickers. We do not see any boys wearing kneepants.

Boys

The boys wear a range of shirts. A few have karge collars. A few boys wear suits. Some boys wear sweaters instead of suit jackets. Some boys wear shirt waists or blouses without any jackets. We do not see any boys wearing bows. Quite a few boys wears overall. This suggests that the community was a farm community. The fact that not all the boys wear overalls suggest that it was not completely a rural community. The boys appear to be wearing overalls or knickers. We do not see any boys wearing kneepants. Note that the boys all wear long black stockings. This image is a good example of how common long stockings were in the 1910s, especially black long stockings. A reader writes, "Have you noticed that the boys in this photograph seem to be wearing long underwear under their long black stockings? Notice the rather loose and bulky appearance of the legs. This, I suspect, was very common in 1911 when central heating was not common and when almost all males, both boys and men, wore union suits under their outer clothes. This was a period before waist union suits had been invented, so the boys are probably wearing ordinary underwaists or skeleton waists with supporters attached to hold up their long stockings--waists such as those illustrated in the HBC catalog section. The waists would have been worn over the union suits or possibly long drawers and shirts."

Girls

Ots a little difficult making out what the girls are wearing. They all look to be wearing dresses with long black stockings. One girl looks to be wearing a tunic. Many appeared to be light-colored dresses. We note two sisters wearing bright checked dresses.
