Figure 1.--The George Putnam School in Boston had photographs taken of their students hard at work in their classes. Most school photography of the day consisted of a photogtraph of the children in front of their school. We also begin to see separate classes, alsomuusally posed outside. We do see a few photograph of the children in their classrooms. The George Putnm provides some particularly good classroom images taken in 1892. The children are shown ebgaged in classroom activities. We see the children in 5th grade class (11-year old) studying butterflies. The children are well dressed. We vsee the girls wearing long dresses, some with pinafores. The boys wear blouses often with bows and knee pants. The phitos we have were taken in June. The boys during cooler months wore their suit jackets.

The boys during cooler months wore their suit jackets. This was part of a photographic survey ordered by the Boston Public Schools (1892-93). Some of the photographs were part of an album displayed at the Paris Exposition Universelle (1900). The school was named for Dr. George Putnam, the long-time pastor of First Church in Roxbury. He also served as a member of Boston Public Library's Board of Trustees (1868-77).
