U.S. School Clothes: Titusville School (Florida)

American school 1940s
Figure 1.--Here we see particularly happy 2nd grade primary class in Titusville, Florida. For some reason, more than half of the class was girls. Tutusville was about half way down the Florida Peninsula, east of Orlando along the coast. So we are taklking about a clmate approaching semi-tropical. The children would be about 7 years old. The portrait was taken in 1945. The class is notable for a variety of reasons.

Here we see particularly happy 2nd grade primary class in Titusville, Florida. We suspect this had to do with the teacher. We should not that Florida befire air conditioning was not yet the tourist mecca it is today and was much more rural and an economy which stll had a major farming sector. First of all, despite being in Florida, a southern state with a warm climate, almost all the boys are wearing long pants. Only one boy is wearing short pants, a self-belted shorts set. Shorts were not all that uncommon in the 1930s and even the early-40s, especially for this age group. But for some reason this began to change after World War II. This boy is taking no changes, he also has suspenders. Actually we see more biys wearig shorts in the South, but not at rural schools. Titusville a the time was a small town in a largely rural area. Second, We see a lot of jeans and one boy wearing overalls. Something that was disappearing with more boys wearing jeans which would become standard in American primary schools. Third, most boys wear collared shirts. Two boys wear striped T-shirts, something that was alsom becoming increasingly popular. Fourth, quite a few of the boys are barefoot, especially but not entirely for the boys. We note another Florida school with even more barefoot children, but a school with migrant labor children. Fifth, As was standard at the time, most of the girls wear dresses. One girl wears shorts, something that was not common schoolwear at the time. Sixth, we do not yet see sneakers at the school, something else that would change in the post-War period.
