This was Miss Fort's 3rd Grade class at the Vienna Elementary School 1952-53. The children would have begun school at age 8 years, but by May some of them were 9 years old. The portrait was taken May 7, 1953. The weather by May in Georgia was beginning to get hot. The girls mostly wear dresses. At least one girl wears a blouseand skirt. Short hair with Striped T-shirts or colorful collared shirts seem very popular with the boys. Almost all the boys wear jeans. Notice how worn they are at the knees. One boy wear short pants. This was much more common in the 1940s, but in the 50s became increasingly less common even for younger boys. It was a little more common in the South because it got so hot in May and June. Most of the boys were barefoot. This was becoming less common in the United States at the time, but Dooly country was a rural county and many younger boys sttill went barefoot, especially when the weather got warm. This would not have been as common in a larger town.
