Western Reserve Academy: Pre-Freshmen

Figure 1.--Here a group of "sub-Frosh" (about 13 years old) are building a fireplace near the campus in October, 1933. One boy seems to be wearing long trousers, while the others are wearing knickers. The boy kneeling at the extreme right of the picture illustrates the problem of knee socks that kept falling down. His socks have slipped down to his ankles, and you can see his exposed bare calves. The boy on the left side of the picture has managed to keep is patterned knee socks in place despite the physical activitiy in which he is involved.

The so-called "sub-Frosh" wre boys who were not yet formally enrolled as Freshmen, but who were at the school as late primary-age students, about 13 or very early 14, and were in a shadowy category of essentially pre-entrants. This helped ease their entry to the school. The sub-Frosh were allowed to take some regular upper-level classes if they were intellectually up to the challenge, and they usually became regular students the following year. They couldn't be members of WRA official teams, but they had athletic instruction on their own. Most of th boys in the early 1930s wore knickers at age 13 although some of the boys had more grown-up suits with long trousers. This was up to the parents. The boys had to wear suits, but the type of suit and pants were up to the parents. The boys also wore a wide range of knee socks.
