Western Reserve Academy: Everyday Schoolwear--Classroom Dress

Figure 1.--This photo shows a boy working on his natural hisdtory project. This photograph was taken at WRA in 1935. Image courtesy of WRA.

None of the images we have show what the boys actually wore to their classes. Some photographs are rather formal suggesting they dressed up for them. Others or informal suggesting that they were taken after classes. We believe that the cafeteria image is probably a good reflection of classroom dress. Presumably the boys here came directly from their classrooms for lunch. The wear ties with either suit jackets or pull-over seaters. We note another photograph from a similar period of a boy working on a natural history/art project. This probably also reflect normal classroom dress, although the portrait looks to be taken after class. This boy (class of 1935) was photographed about 1932. He is working on a sculpture of a squirrel in his Natural History/Art class. This shows the dress code for boys in the classroom in the 1930s--a shirt and tie with a V-necked sweater. He is probably wearing knickers although you can't see his legs. Jackets were encouraged, but some boys, especially the younger boys, were apparently allowed to get by with just sweaters.
