Individual U.S. Schools: Wide Avenue School (Unknown northern city, 1878)

Figure 1.-- Here we have a stereoview card showing children in front of a substantial three-story school. The dealer dates the photograph at about 1878 which seems reasonable based on the mount style and the children's clothes. We see a wide avenue in a toney city suburb. The boys and girls are separated. We can make out the girls clothes better than the boys clothes. While the clothing is not real clear, it does provide the context for the much clearer individual portraits we have archived. The avenue seems to be unpaved. It looks to have been taken early in the year before the foliage had come out. We suspect it was taken in the northeast based on the trees, but can not be more specific. This was before the automobile was invented, but we do not see any horsedrawn vehicles of any kind as well although there might be a carriage in the very distant background.

The families here look well-to-do. The boys and girls are separated. We can make out the girls clothes better than the boys clothes. All the children have headwear. The boys all wear long pants andthe girls all wear dresses with rather long skirts. ll ythe children are wearing shoes. The avenue seems to be unpaved. There may also be a horse and carriage to the left behind the boys, but it is not clear.
