Individual U.S. School: Unidentified Maryland School (1900)

Figure 1.--Here is a wonderful photograph of the interior of a classroom with the children sitting at their desks. The great bulk of school images are taken outdoors. These indoor images are not that common and fascinatingwhen we find them. The boys in the back row had to go stand with their teacher at the front of the class. The teacher has written the date on the blackboard for us-- Oct 11, 1900.

The teacher has written the date on the blackboard for us-- Oct 11, 1900. Quite a few girls wear hairbows, but not the large ones we see in the 1910s. Many also wear pinafores. Images like this give a good idea about pinafore prevalence. Sailor outfits seem popular, but more for the girls than boys. Several girls wear sailor dresses and in varied styles. One boy looks to be wearing a print blouse with a detachable sailor collar. We have not seen that very commonly. The boys and girls seem all mixed up. Often they were separated. There's a stove in the center of the room and a portrait of George Washington on the wall. The school is not identified, but the photograph came out of Carroll County, Maryland estate. Overall size of this cabinet card is about 8" by 10". The actual image is about 4.75" by 7.9".
