U.S. Public Schools: Rural Schools--Classrooms

rural American schools
Figure 1.--Here we have an postcard-back portrait showing an unidetified rural school. We do know when it was taken--during the early-1910s decade. (The clothing and four diamond Velox stamp box help us to date it.) Click on the image to have a look at the classroom inside. Here we even have the children's names.

Most of the photographs available on rural schools are images of the children standing outside their schools. This was not unreasonable and we want to know what the schools looked like. The surroundings are also interesting and useful in understanding more about the schools. What we rarely get to see is the classrooms inside the schools. Part of the reason for this is the complication of taking photographs inside. The studios could this because of design or flash illumination. This was a problem out in the boondocks where rural schools were located. Early photography required long exposure times. This worked outside in he sunlight because shorter exposure times worked. Gradually technology advanced photography reducing exposure times. We see a few classroom images in the late-19th century, mostly the 1890s. Most of the indoor classroom photographs we have come from the 20th-century. We do begin to see a number of classroom images by the turn-of-the 20h century. The 1900s decade is the first decade in which substantial number of images are number. Even with one room schools, it is notable that all the desks are clustered together despite the wide age range, And the desks at the time were heavy iron and wood creations--not easily movable. Also notable is how bare-bones they were. Very little in he way of teaching aids or decorations.
