English School Uniform: Blazer Chronology--The 1920s

Figure 1.--This portrait is undated, but the unidentified boy wears a blazer with piping. Note the piping on the bkazer pocket, but no school crest. Note that he does not wear a school tie with his blazer. We do see a fountain pen. We suspect that he is an older boy about to finish at his prepschool. We would guess that the portrait was taken in the 1920s. The lapels are donein an unusual manner.

Schools in the 20th century, especially after World War I began adopting the blazer as an integral pert of the school uniform. We believe this in the decde in which the blazer became commonly worn at English schools. Our informtion on the decade, however, is still quite limited. The adoption of the blazer appears to have been especially common at preparatory schools. Blazers while not new, were worn to a greater extent than ever before. We see stylisistic differences. Notice the lapels on the blazer here (figure 1). Some public (private secondary) schools also adopted blazer uniforms. Conventions were often more formal at the time. Schools with uniforms commonly required that the children wear their blazers during the school day. Special permission was required for boys to take off therir blazers, even on a hot summer day. Boys commonly wore blazers with matching caps.
