Figure 1.--The cabinet card portrait here shows a boy at the La Salle Institute, probably about 1910. The uniform shows the West Point influence.

The L Salle Institute was founded by the Brothers of the Christian School (1850). At thetime, the Unmitedstates was still strongly Protestant, only slightly affected by the infflux of Irish immigrants (1840s). Many Catholics felt strongly by the need fror Catholic educational opportunities given the Protestant dominance of the public schools and society in general. The school was founded as an all bots school and remained sio gfor many years. It began at a site on Fourth Street in South Troy, New York. There was a dual purpose. First to provide a Catholic educational alternative to the public schools. Second, to educate and support poor immigrant students, many of whom were Irish, from the grit of Troy. The idea was to assisting them in becoming moral, productive and honorable adults and fully take advantage of the opportunities offered by America. State Governments gradually began to more closely regulate schools. The Regents of the State of New York chartered La Salle (1891). The school achieved the the highest academic diplomas awarded in the state. It is at this time that the military training program was added to the school that same year. We note that the La Salle Institute was active in the early 20th century as an all-boys military school. A portrait shows a cadet boy at the school, probably about 1910. The school contunue to operte today. (It is an independent (private) Catholic college preparatory school with a 12 year program, meaning students from grades 6-12. The school describes itself, "Its mission is to educate young men and women in the Lasallian tradition by providing a loving, caring, supportive environment, encouraging them to realize their whole potential and become moral, responsible, and productive members of their communities with a sense of purpose and dedication to truth, honor and duty. La Salle accomplishes this through excellence in teaching by a devoted staff in a small, student centered environment which imparts Christian values in the tradition of our Founder, Saint John Baptist de La Salle. This commitment is shared by all members of the Lasallian Community." The school became coeducational (2021).
