German Lederhosen Chronology: The 1970s--Usage

Figure 1.--This German school photograph was taken in 1972. We think it was taken in West Germany. The children look to be secondary students, probably about 14 years old. By the 1970s it was not common for secondary-level students to wear lederhosen, especially with halters and kneesocks. The portrait looks to have been taken in the Summer. Perhaps warm summer weather was a facyor here. Click on the image to see the whole class.

Lederhosen conventions and popularity varied in the 1970s. Our information is incomplete at this time. We do note that some younger boys continued to wear lederhosen in the 1970s. We see adds in German catalogs, but usually in smaller sizes. Only a few older boys can be seen wearing lederhosen in the 1970s. While most boys wore long pants to school in the 1970s, we notice a few school photographs showing boys wearing Lederhosen. German schools did not have school uniforms. Children and their parents could choose what they wore. Thus there is considerable variation. Lederhosen were once very common in German schools. This is no longer the case in the 1970s. But we notice occassional exceotions. This German school photograph was takenin West Germany during 1972. The shaggy hair cuts and the absence of schoolm uniforms suggest West more than East Germabny. Also lederhosen were not very common in East Germany, because leather pants were expensive. The children here look to be secondary students, probably about 14 years old (figure 1). By the 1970s it was not common for secondary-level students to wear lederhosen, especially with halters and kneesocks. The portrait looks to have been taken in the Summer. Perhaps warm summer weather was a facyor here.We also not some boys wearing Lederhosen for Scouts.
