German Boys Lederhosen Conventions: Play and Leisure

Lederhosen were also ideal outdoor and play clothes. We seem many boys wearing them for outdoor activities. Many avilable images show boys wearing them while on hikes or camping trips in the country. Hiking in the country seems to have been an especially popular activity in Germany. Here we see quite a number of older boys wearing Ldeerhosen. But they were also worn for more generalized play by younger boys in and arounf the home as well. They were particularly popular after World War II through the 1970s. Boys of all ages wore them through the 1950s, but by the 1960s older boys increasingly began wearing jeans for casual wear. They began to be less commonly worn in the 1980s as fewer boys German boys wanted to wear short pants and jeans became increasingly popular.

Outdoor Pursuits

Lederhosen were also ideal outdoor and play clothes. They were thus especially popular for outdoor pursuits. We see many boys wearing them for outdoor activities. This is not surprising as Lederhosen appear to have originated as farm work clothes. The fact that they were indistrutable and did not need constnt washing made them idea for outdoor pursuits. We see them being wirn by boys in youth groups as well as boys in more more informal groups and by individuals. Many avilable images show boys wearing them while on hikes or camping trips in the country. While hiking and camping seem yto have been tWe would think cord or other fabric shorts would seem more practical, but neverhelss boys also wore Lederhosen. he most popular outdoor pursuit in which Lederhosen were commonly worn, we also notice them being worn for boating trips. Often they were worn with knee socks ad sturdy footwear. Hiking in the country seems to have been an especially popular activity in Germany. Here we see quite a number of older boys wearing Ldeerhosen. This was fairly common until the 1960s when teenagrs began to increasigly wear jeans.

Play

Lederhosen were notable for outdoor pursuits, often by teenagers. They were also worn for more generalized play by younger boys in and around the home as well. We see school age boys commonly wearing Lederhosen for play. We are guessing that they were the same Lederosen they wore to school. Lederhosen are virtually indistructable. Thus they the boys did not have to chabnge after school for play. The play activities were of course affected by the age of the boys. They were particularly popular after World War II through the 1970s. We see school age boys wearing Lederhosen for play after most reenagers had switched to jeans. Thus the youngr children wore them in to the 60s and 70s. We think a factore here is that the propsperity Germany experienced in the 1950s allowed more families to afford Lederhosen. Lederhosen began to be less commonly worn in the 1980s as even fewer younger boys German boys wanted to wear short pants and jeans became increasingly popular.

Casual/Leisure Wear

Lederhosen were very flexible garment. They were not only worn for active outdoor pursuits and play, but for casual leisure wear as well. We note boys wearing Lederhosen as casual wear at home, both inside and outside. We note boys lounging at home or at informal family gatherings at home. We also notice them being worn casually for outings to parks, zoos, and other lesisure spots. Boys of all ages wore them through the 1950s, but by the 1960s older boys increasingly began wearing jeans for casual wear. his was probably more common for the pre-pteens, but we see teenagers wearing Lederhosen thenm for leisurewear, especially in the 1950s. Boys might wear Lederhosen as general liesure wear at hme or for activities like family outings to local parks.
