American Middle-class Family (about 1925)

Figure 1.--Here we see three American brothers in their backyard. Notice the car in the driveway. The boys look to be about 3-10 years old. It is a good example as to how boys dressed at different ages in the 1920s. The boys wear rompers, a short pants sailor suit, and a sports collar shirt with knickers. The snapshot is undated but looks like it was taken about 1925.

Here we see three unidentified American brothers in a family snapshot taken in their backyard. The high back car is not a model T but beyond that I cannot tell you what it is other than it helps date the car to the 1920s. The knee socks rathe thn long tockings the boys wear also help date the snpshot to the 1920s. They look like a compfortable American middle class family. A reader has provided a detailed assessments of the various outfits the boys wear.

Younger Brother (about 3 years old)

Their little brother todler wears a white button back romper with a fancy Peter Pan collar. It may be a a two piece item with the romper pants buttoning to the waist shirt. The waistline has at least 3 buttons, they may be decorative.

Middle Brother (about 6 years old)

The middle brother wears a middly suit, probanly blue, grey or tan. It appears to be linen from the wrinkles. Those shorts would be held up by some sort of under waist. Notice that the arm's length of the sleeves are a bit long for him and the shorts hang below the knees which are also probably slightly large. So I assume it is either new or a hand-me-down from his older brother. He is wearing striped top knee socks. I cannot tell if the extra stripe on the boy's left leg is the garter showing or something about the photograph. He wears a tie (seeming black or navy) and a non-conventional sailor collar done in points rather than the standard V-front. There is a conventional shield/dickey.

Older Brother (about 10 yars old)

The older boy who is about 10 years old appears to be a blouse/shiirtb with a sports collar and tie. I have seen quite a few catalogs and examples in the photographic record showing that collar at the time. It was not made to be worn with a tie, but mothers often added one. You can see how the top blouses at the waist of the knickers. The image is not very clear, but they look like corduroy knickers which were standard school wear. The photograph, however was taken during the summer. The boy wears light-colored knee socks, probably tan. They are turned over the round garters keeping them up. His tie is not black and his knickers are a dark color probably brown or blue or even charcoal but definitely not black.
