Short Pants: Soccer Shorts Changes

Figure 1.--These boys wear the new larger size shorts and jersies that became popular in the 1990s.

A major change in soccer uniforms occurred in the 1990s. Following changes in the styles of short pants worn generally, boys began wearing larger jerseys as well as oversized shorts. Similar changes occurred in basketball shorts. In many ways these shorts were similar to the soccer uniforms worn in the early 20th century. They tend to have more detailing than the shorts worn by boys in the 1960s-80s, in part because the larger size afford more spave for detailing and even logos. Boys also began wearing heavier kneesocks. Some boys wore heavy socks under ordinary sport kneesocks.
