Boys Knitted Wear: Pants

Figure 1.--The lady here is popular American Broadway and Hollywood film star Lee Ann Remick. She was popular from the late-1950s to the early-70s. The press photogrph here is not dated, but looks to have been taken in the 1960s. Notice the two children with boy-girl coordinated knit outfits. They may be twins. The children look to be about 3 years old. The photograph was taken in Italy. The church is the Basilic of St. Mark in Venice.

We notice knits pants for younger boys. They seems to have been primaily done for pre-school age boys. This was primariy infants and todlers, but we also see 4 an 5 year old boys with knit pants. This was not as common as yonger boys, but we do see examples. Boys in the younger primry years might also have worn knit pants, but this was not nearly as common as pre-school boys. Most of the knit pants we have found in the photographic record are short pants, but there ae examples of long pants as well, we suspect primarily for winter wear. We do not yet have much information on the conventions for long knit pants. We have not yet found enough examples in the phtographic record to make an informed assessment. Unlike other knit garments, our primary assessment is that knits pants were also exclusily made as part of suit sets.

Short Pants

Although sweaters were the more common garment, pants were also knitted. These were usually short psnts. Amajor factor here was age. Younger boys more commonly wore short pants. This was a convention not only for knit pants, but for pants in general worn by younger boys. The most common knitted short pants were those made for toddler boys. But some knitted shorts were also made for sizes up to about 8 years. Knitted shorts for older boys were much less common. In part this was because of the complications of adding a fly. The simple styles usually without pockets and belt loops were only suitable for younger boys. Suspension was usually dome with an elasticized waist.

Long Pants

Most of the knit pants we have found in the photographic record are short pants, but there are examples of long pants as well, we suspect primarily for winter wear. We do not yet have much information on the conventions for long knit pants. We have not yet found enough examples in the ptographic record to make an informed assessment.
