German Strap Shoes Designs: Tie Straps

Figure 1.-- We see some boys wearing strap shoes tied like modern dance shoes. Most strap shoes had buckle attachments. We do not know much about the tie strap shoes. Here we see a group of German children in 1931. The girls mostly wear standard strap shoes. The boy's strap shoes seem to have a wide strap that is tied together.

There were many types of strap shoes. One of these different types were lace-tie straps. We see some boys wearing strap shoes tied like modern dance shoes. This was not a common type of strap shoe, but we do see a few examples in the photographic record. Most strap shoes had buckle attachments. The strap in these shoes seems to have been joined by laces and thus was wider than in most strap shoes. We do not know much about the tie strap shoes. Our archive is fairly limited and thus we do not yet fully understand the conventions involved. As far as we can tell, this was more common for boys than for girls. We also only note the shoes in Germany and have not seen them in other countries. We are not entirely sure what material they were made from. Some seem to be made in canvas rather than leather. They seem to have been colored shoes. The examples we have seen were light colors, but our archive is so limited that we are not sure how representative this was.

Popularity

This was not a common type of strap shoe, but we do see a few examples in the photographic record. Most strap shoes had buckle attachments.

Gender

As far as we can tell, this was more common for boys than for girls. At least the examples we have found to date show boys wearing them.

Country Trends

We also only note the shoes in Germany and have not seen them in other countries.

Material

We are not entirely sure what material they were made from. Some seem to be made in canvas rather than leather.

Color

These tie strap shoes seem to have been colored shoes. The examples we have seen were light colors. We are not sure just what color they were because of the black-and-white-photography of the day. We would guess light blue. Other countries are possible, but blue shades seem the most likely. Some straps shoes were done in red, but these would not show up as such light colors in black-and-white. Our archive is, however, so limited that we are not sure how representative this was. Hopefully as our archive grows we can get a better fix on this.
