This decorative cabinet card show two boys wearing matching short pants suits. with patterned long stockings. The boys are not idenified, but look to be about 7-9 years old. the portrait is not dated but would have been taken about 1930, either in the late-1920s or early 30s. The Studio was Colby in Fort Atlinson, Wisconsin. Long stockings were more commonly worn in northern states like Wisconsin than the rest of the country. A reader provides a more detailed assessment. " I don't know if you noticed that the two boys look to be a year or two apart and not twins. Both wear round garters to hold up their patterned argyle long stockings. I am uncertain of their age? But I think the boy on the right is the older one. [HBC would guess the boy on the left is the older one.] From the sole of the boy on the left, you can see that the shoes were either very new (hardly worn out area around balls of feet) or saved for special occasions. It is hard to tell due to the photo lighting but I think the boys are wearing long stockings under their matching short suits. I could be wrong. That also hints that the date is 1920s to early 1930s because the length of the short trousers were probably closer to knee length rather than the shorter style short trousers of the mid to later 1930s. The style of the patent leather low-cut shoes are close to what modern boys would wear when not wearing sneakers (of course patent leather would not be the finish today). I hope readers understand that because the long stockings were on the shorter side and the round garters fit just above the knee, it would mean that short trousers (called knee trousers for a reason back then) had to be long enough to cover the garter and skin while sitting. I am not certain I was very clear in what I wrote."
