English Berets: Chronology

English berets
Figure 1.-- We note one unidentified boy we think in the 1920s. The woman's helmet-style hat helps to date the snpshot to the 1920s. We think he is English, although can not be sure. The snapshot was found in Lancashire with many many English photographs. Just why he is wearing a beret we are not sure.

We have found so few images of English boys wearing berets that we are unable to construct a meaningful chronology. A problem here is that wev areb not always sure if the boys are wearing tams or berets. For example we see [Henejy?] Brittches (1870s). Thuis is the earlies examplev of a beret we have found so far. We note the Llewllyn-Davies boys wearing berets in the 1890s. This is the first example we have found far. But this may be an exception more related to the mother's artistic tastes. And on the previous page we see an onion seller wearing a beret in Devon during the 1900s. He may have Breton connections. We note one unidentified boy we think in the 1920s (figure 1). The woman's helmet-style hat helps to date the snpshot to the 1920s. We think he is English, although can not be sure. The snapshot was found in Lancashire with many many English photographs. Just why he is wearing a beret we are not sure. And then there are the Couts who adopted the beret as part of the uniform in the 1960s. hiscis the only large number of English boys we have found wearing berets.
