Figure 1.--This large size cabinet card (8 1/2 x 5 1/4 inches) has no accompanying information. It looks like an American portrait probably taken about 1900 in the family backyard. The boy wears a Norfolk suit, wih his brimless cap.

We notice a range of brimlless caps boys werewearing in the late-19th century. We Have no idea what these caps were called. Brimless is just a description of the caps. They look somewhat like smoking caps, but made for children and worn outdoors. They seem relteto pill-box cp, but did no have had sides. We see a number of boys wearing these cap. As best we can tell, this was primrly a style worn in America. We are never quite sure if this signals prevalence or simply reflects our larger American archive. Clothing items are both utilitarian and fashion items. We are not sure what the utilitarian value of these caps were. This would be vthe same as a beret. They would help keep the head warm in cold whether. As far as we can tell his was a style worn in the late-19th century (1870-1900). We are unsure how to date the portrait. We note thesecaps being won wih a range of outfits. They were mostly worn by boys and younger teen, but we do note some being worn by bike riders who were an olderr demographic. They wee suitable for bike riders because you do not want a wide brim when riding bkes--it might go flying off with the wind.
