Boys' Bangs: The 1910s

Bangs were becoming an increasingly popular hair style for boys as ringlets and other longer hair styles declined in popularity. Long hair for boys was declining in popularity in the 1910s. Boys wearing bangs wore both the long and short style. Some boys still wore it long over their ears. Other boys had it cut above their ears. Interestingly they were great variations in the clothing styles worn. Some boys wore juvenile over the ear hair with rather mature looking ties while others had abobe the ear cuts with juvenile floppy bows.

Chronology

Bangs were becoming an increasingly popular hair style for boys as ringlets and other longer hair styles declined in popularity. Long hair for boys was declining in popularity in the 1910s.

Styles

The basic stylistic differences were the cut of the front forehead fringe and the length of hair on the side.

Front fringe

The front fringe was worn in two basic ways. One way was to cut in straight across. The other way was to round it by cuting the front fringe in a circular, bowl cut pattern.

Side length

Boys wearing bangs wore both the long and short style. Some mostly younger boys still wore it long over their ears. In some cases the hair fell straight down over the ears. In other cases it was aloowed to curl up at the end. Even with the longer style, the hair was not normally allowed to fall to the shoulders. Other boys had it cut above their ears.

Clothing Conventions

Interestingly they were great variations in the clothing styles worn. Some boys wore juvenile over the ear hair with rather mature looking ties while others had above the ear cuts with juvenile floppy bows. Tunics and sailor suits were also commonly worn with bangs. Other seemingly confusing stylisic combinations existed. Some boys might wear bangs and long hair with a semingly mature-looking suit like a Norfolk suit.

Individual Accounts

There are many photographs archived on HBC showing boys wearing bangs in the 1910s. A good example is an American boy, Lloyd Flint.
