Boys' Hair Bows: Twin Side Bows

Figure 1.--This trick photograph shows both the front and backmof a boy wearingb hair bows. He wears the relatively rare twin hair bows. He is an American boy who was photographed in the 1890s.

Boys wearing hair bows most commonly had one side bow. A less common style for boys hair bows were twin bow on each side of the boy's head. While less common, we have noted a number of portaits of boys with twin side bows. This might be done when the boy had particularly long hair which might hang at the back. I don't know if the hair was ever done in pony tails. The twin bows probably were most commonly used with ringlet curls. Almost all of the available images of boys in hair bows show single bows. The only portaits we have found today are of American boys. But this may be sue to the greater availability of Amerian images to HBC. I am not sure if twin bows were worn by bows in other countries.

Popularity

Boys wearing hair bows most commonly had one side bow. Almost all of the available images of boys in hair bows show single bows. A less common style for boys hair bows were twin bow on each side of the boy's head. While less common, we have noted a number of portaits of boys with twin side bows. A good example is Frederick James Robb in 1900.

Long Hair

Twin bows might be used when the boy had particularly long hair which might hang at the back. I don't know if the hair was ever done in pony tails. Boys with twin side curls often had their hair done in ringlets, but this was not always the case. In fact the twin bows probably were most commonly used with ringlet curls.

Countries

The only portaits we have found today are of American boys. But this may be sue to the greater availability of Amerian images to HBC. I am not sure if twin bows were worn by bows in other countries.

Hair Parts

Twin side bows were often done with twin side parted hair. Some boys also had center parts or ner centr parts.
