Boys' Hair Bows: Bow Types

Figure 1.--Here we see an unidentified American boy, we believe in the 1870s. Simple, small bows like this were the most popular style for boys. They seem to be simple loops, rather like a shoe lace bow. The top center position was rather unusual.

There do not seem to have been mamy different types of hair bows for boys. What we notice seem to be either the ribbon type and less commonly more destinctive bows. They seem to be all pretty similar, basically a simple, unobtrusive ribbon which look to be tied in a simple loop like shoe laces. The ribbon might be narrow or medium with. Some mothers, however, believed in the larger style bow like the girls wore--but this was relatively rare. The largest bows were reserved for the girls. In most images it is dfficult to make out enough of the detail to ascertain the type of the bow.
