Ringlet Curls Back: Styles

Figure 1.--This boy looks to have 10 ringlets and they all look thick. Note that there are 8 normal ringlets, but two which are a little shorter but thicker are made from hair drawn back from the top of the boy's head. Note the small ringlets at the front in figure 4 thatvare not visible here. This means that he actually had 12 ringlets.

HBC has noted a number of different ringlet styles for the back. Most ringlet hair styles were done with ringlets falling both at the side and back. Some ringlet styles seem to have been done to fall mostly in the back. We note styles with both uniform and variable ringlets. Most of the fancy styling, if any, was done at the front or crown. Stylistic differences at the back primarily concerned uniformity or variance with the side curls. The fall of the ringlets varies depenfing on how the hair is combed. Back curls may reflect the fact that the hair has been cut at the side and allowed to grow in the back. A center part will produce mostly side ringlets. How the hair is cut will also produce variation. The multiple characteristic involved make for quote a number of varied styles.

Uniform Look

Some ringlet styles had a uniform look at the back with all of the ringlets having the same lor a very similar look. Here we are talking about both thickness and length. Tis can iusually only be noticed with back views.

Shorter Side Ringlets

Probably the most common style for ringlets was to have the ringlets at the back cut to about the same length. The side ringlets might be done to a slightly shorter length than those at the back. This may reflect how the hair is cut. Curring the side hair and allowing the hair to grow at the back may produce this style.

Extra Two

Some boys had a hair style with two extra ringlets. The boy in figure 3 has 10 ringlets and they all look thick! Note that there are 8 normal ringlets, but two which are a little shorter but thicker are made from hair drawn back from the top of the boy's head. I'm not sure how common this style was.

Only Back Ringlets

The fall of the ringlets varies depenfing on how the hair is combed. Back curls may reflect the fact that the hair has been cut at the side and allowed to grow in the back. We are not sure why a mother would chose this style because the ringlets could only be seen to good effect from the back. The hair would be cut sometimes quite short at the side and allowed to grow out at the back. The hairwould also have to be comved a little differently than styles with side curls which normally had center parts.
