U.S. Boys' Ringlet Curl Styles: The Back--Stylistic Elements

The back view portraits of ringlet curl styling helps to complete the picture of ringlet styling. Portraits vary considerably, but generally speaking we only see a few of the ringlets in frontal view portraits. When we have back view we mormally see many more ringlets as well as a better understanding of how the ringlets were worked in with the overall hair style. The back view portraits show more about the length and thickness of the curls. They also show how the parts were dealt with in the back.

Thinkness

When we only have frontal views it is difficult to assess the relative thickness of the ringlets. Normally we only see a few of the runglets. Here, for example, we have rather slender ringlets and we only have a good view of two of the boy's ringlets on the previous page. On the back view we can see more of the ringlets and there appears to consideable consistency in the thicjness of the ringlets. As far as we can tell, mothers always tried to make the ringlets the same thickness. This was apparently easier to do than the make them the sanme length. Notice all the inglets here ate the same thickness.

Length

Mothers seem to have attempted to make the ringlets the same length. This was, however, complicated. When we only have frontal views it is also difficult to assess the relative length of the ringlets. Normally we only see a few of the runglets. Here, for example, we only have a good view of two of the boy's ringlets on the previous page. On the back view we can see more of the ringlets and there appears to be some difference in the length. This is a little complicated to assess. In some cases rhe riglets are different lengths, but begin higher up on the scalp. Thus the actual length of the ringlets in the sane althiugh some fall further down on the shoulders than others. The boy herec is a good example (figure 1).

Parts

There were many differentv types of parts used with riglet curls. There are both side and center parts. The side parts were done in a number of different ways. The frontal portraits we see the parts or at least how the parts begin. The back views show us how the parts finish up. In some cases the parts end before reaching the back. In other vases the pats are very destinctive at the back of the boy's head. In some cases we can not even see any sign of the parts at the back. The boy here is aood example (figure 1).
