Boys' Ringlet Curls: Process and Hair Styling

HBC has collected some information about the process of curling hair with details about hair styling. Boys wearing curls had to endure having their hair done up just like their sisters. It is interesting to look at some boys before and after their curls are cut. These are boys who are unidentified, all HBC has is the images to go on. HBC has received mamy requests about ringlet curls. Espcially the mechanics of culing hair. HBC has only limited information on how hair was curled. We have noted, however, some interesting internet sites.

Process

HBC has collected some information about the process of curling hair with details about hair styling. Boys wearing curls had to endure having their hair done up just like their sisters. Boys were subjected to the same torment of curls and hairbows that their sisters endured. For most of the boys--but not all--it mercifully lasted only a brief few years. For their sisters it lasted through their entire girlhood.

Cutting Curls

It is interesting to look at some boys before and after their curls are cut. These are boys who are unidentified, all HBC has is the images to go on. One interesting aspect in these images is the clothing that went along with curls and short hair. In some case boys had their curls cut while still in dresses and in other instances only after they were breeched. As far as I can tell there were no conventions on the matter. HBC hopes to review the fashion magazines of the day to see how contemprary artbiters of taste addressed to issue--if at all.

Pin Curls & Rag Curls Made Easy

The Hair Boutique site has an interesting article about curling hair. The article is on pin curls and rag curls. Theuthor was inspired to write this article after she read someone's post on Hair Talk asking for a way to keep their hair untangled and get curls. Pin and rag curls really do prevent bed head, tangles, keep your neck nice and cool as well as add body and curl (well, curl as long as it's not too humid).

Modern Curlers

A HBC reader asks a question, "I have a question: do you know what methods mothers would have used to curl boys' hair in the period 1900-1920? Had modern curlers been introduced?" HBC does not yet have details on curling methods. We believe in the years before World War I that the traditional methods described above are the way curls were made. Just when modern cullers were developed we do not yet have precise details. We suspect the 1930s and by this time of course no longer wore ringket curls.
