Boys' Hair Styles: Layer Cuts--Country Trends

Figure 1.--Here we see a New Zealand boy in the first year of high school wearing a classic layered hair cut in 1994.

We have limited information as to the countries in which this hair style was popular. We have seen this style worn in America. It was perhaps more popular there than in any other country. We noticed that in America it was especially popular for boys with blond hair. I'm not sure why that was. We have also noted it in Australia, England, and New Zealand. A Canadian reader writes, "This style of hair cut was popular in Canada too. Anything that is stylish in the USA is usually popular in Canada as well as Canadians get their fashions from Americans." We are less sure about Continental Europe. A reader tells us that he has noted German boys with these layered cuts. Hopefully, HBC readers can provide more information on this style.

Netherlands

A Belgian reader un 2005 writes, "This type of haircut is not uncommon in Holland and Belgium, even today. (Does this mean that our fashions are lagging behind ?). It is called "bloempotcoupe" (flowerpot cut) over here." Interesting that it is still popular in the Neetherlands and Belgium. I could be wrong, but I no longer commonly see this style in the States.
