American Boys' Hair Styles: Longer Styles (2000s)

Figure 1.--

A hair stylist in 2007 tells us that she notes more mothers requesting longer hair cuts. Here is the account she provided.

Highlights

A friend happened to show me your site and I can't resist commenting. I'm a hairstylist and have been doing childrens' hair in a very busy children's salon for just over 12 years. During that time I've seen an increasing number of mothers doing some really feminine things with their sons hair. It's not quite the ringlet curls you show but its not far from it. We saw the first hints of this about 10 years ago when a few mothers started quietly asking if we could put highlights in their light boys hair. Highlights mean coloring small sections of hair, usually lighter, to give more color variation. We've done it for years with women, but it gradually became popular for little boys. Usually, like age 3-8. Surprisingly, we very seldom do this with little girls. Over the years that's become more and more common and now we routinely do it with boys from age 3 through teenage years. It's really a pretty feminine process but most boys don't seem to mind it as long as others don't see them.

Locks of Love

Recently we've seen something even more unusual. There's an organization called Locks of Love that accepts donations of hair to make wigs for kids with cancer. The hair donated has to be 10" long. Lots of moms and girls do this but we're seeing lots of mother who are keeping their sons' hair long to donate. Boys anywhere from 4 to 13-14 are growing hair that's midback length before it get cut. Some are even longer. The mothers all say they (the boy) wants to grow his hair out to donate it to Locks of Love. But 6 year old boys don't make descisions like that. It's the mom's idea. And it's pretty obvious why.

Fashion

We see these little boys with hair that just keeps getting longer and longer. Long after they've reached the 10" lenght, moms sitll won't get it cut more than trimming the ends. Sometimes their clothes look like they came from the girls section rather than the boys. Not dresses or skirts, but shorts and blouses. Some of the things that mothers have had us do to these boys hair is nothing short of amazing. We'll do whatever they want, but I can assure you there is lots of discussion in our shop after they leave. So, I just wanted to tell you that long hair styles for little boys is not just a thing of the past. It's still with us. We'd say in about 2-3 percent of the boys we see under the age of 10.
