Boys' Hair Styles: Defined Parts

Figure 1.--This is relatively rare image. Often boys in Fauntleroy had front bangs, some times with ringley curls, so no front part was visible. This boy has a perfectly combd center part. In the mid-19th century t was girls who had center parts. This was changing in the 1880s and by the 1890s centerparts were more common for boys.

Normlly boys have one obvious, clearly defined part which would be located on either side of the head or in the center. Left parts have been the most common. Presumably because most people are right handed and did the combing with the left hand. Of course mom did the early combing, but perhaps used dad as the model. Here I am not sure, but will assess this as we collect more information. There may have been chronolgical as well as national differences concerning the side parted. Parts especially if combed by mother could be razor sharp. Often the parts are not so perfectly defined, but still quite sharp.

Razor Parts

Parts especially if combed by mother could be razor sharp. Often the parts are not so perfectly defined, but still quite sharp. Of course these razor parts were especially common in portarits where mother wanted to be sure every last shock of hair was perfectly plastered down. We see this especially when hair oil of some kind is applied. A good example is American boy Harry B. Decker in the 1880s.
