Classic Broad-brimmed Sailor Hats: Decorative Weave

Figure 1.--This American boy probablu in the 1900s wears a wide-brimmed sailor hat. Notice the decorative weave at the edge of the vrim.

Most of the wide-brimmed straw hats we have noted are solid colors. We note some hats, however, woth varigated colors--dar and light patterns. Some of these decorative weave are theoughout the hat. Others have this decorative weave only around the edge of the brim. We have no information concerning the conventions assocated with these decoratibe weaves. Most of the decorated hats we have noted are portarits taken around the turn of the 20th century. Our information, however, is to limited to form a subtanial time line. We have noted these decorative weaves in both American and Belguian images, but beloeve that they were also worn in different countries.
