Turbans

Figure 1.--This portrait was taken somewhere in French West Africa by Andre de Dienes in 1941. It was entitled only "Native boy".

We have very little information on turbans at this time. It is a male garment worn by both men and boys. While boys canb wear turbans, mostly we see them being worn by men, perhaps because of the complicated process in preparing the turban. The turban consists of a long length of material (normally silk, cotton, or linen) would either around a cap or directly on the head. We note turbans being worn in the Middle East, South Asia and to a lesser extent Southeast Asia. It is perhaps most common on the Indiasn subcontinent. We notice turbasns in India. Sikhs wear turbans as a matter of religious requirement. It is also a garment assosciated with Hindus and Muslims. We do not yet have information on the historical origins of the turban. We have one image of an Arab boy in the United Arab Emirates wearing a turban. A reader tells us, "The turban is not generally head attire worn by children of middle East parentage."
